One of the biggest friction points for any platform is the sign-up process. You have an idea, you want to share it with the world, and then you hit a form asking for your email, password, and your firstborn child's middle name.
We built Jottings to be simple. That simplicity extends to how you sign in.
The Three Ways In
Starting today, you can sign up and log into Jottings in three ways:
Email & Password: The classic approach. Good old-fashioned email verification. No surprises, no syncing with other accounts. Just you and your credentials.
Continue with Google: If you're already in the Google ecosystem—Gmail, Drive, Photos, all of it—this is the fastest path. One click, and you're in.
Continue with Apple: Same story for Apple users. If you've got an Apple ID, sign in with it instantly.
Each method works for both new sign-ups and existing logins. You pick what's convenient for you, and that's what we remember.
Why We Added This
I've always believed that the best technology gets out of your way. A sign-up process shouldn't be a speed bump on your journey to sharing ideas.
But there's another reason, too. Different people have different comfort levels with how their data moves around. Some prefer the simplicity and control of a dedicated email account. Others value the convenience of OAuth, trusting that Google or Apple's single sign-on is already doing the security work.
By offering all three, we're respecting that choice. You get to decide what feels right.
The Security Question
I know what you're thinking: Is OAuth actually secure? Can I trust it?
Yes, and yes.
OAuth (Open Authorization) is an industry standard that's been around for years. Google and Apple take security seriously—they have entire teams and billions of dollars riding on protecting user accounts. When you "Continue with Google" or "Continue with Apple," you're not handing us your password. You're letting that provider confirm who you are.
We only get access to what you allow: your email and public profile information. Nothing more.
In fact, in some ways, OAuth is more secure than passwords. You don't have to remember another password. You can't accidentally reuse it on a sketchy site. And if your password does get compromised, you only need to secure it in one place.
Email sign-ups are secure too, of course. We hash your password, we use HTTPS, and we follow the security standards that keep data safe.
What We Know About You
Here's something I like about knowing how people sign up: it tells us what matters to them.
Are you a Gmail user? You probably appreciate seamless integrations.
Apple ID sign-in? You're in an ecosystem that values privacy as a feature.
Traditional email? You like control and simplicity.
We track this not to profile you, but to understand our users better. It helps us build a better product. It helps us know what integrations matter most. It helps us understand what resonates with our audience.
And if you're wondering—no, we're not selling this data. We're not showing ads based on your sign-in method. We're just… noticing.
Getting Started
If you've been sitting on the fence about Jottings, maybe you were waiting for your preferred sign-in method. Now's the time.
Head to jottings.me, pick whichever sign-in feels most natural, and you'll be creating your first jot in seconds. Verify your email (if you're doing email sign-up), and you're live.
No complicated onboarding. No features you don't need. Just you and a place to share.
What's Next
We're committed to making authentication work the way you work. If there's another sign-in method you'd like to see—passkeys, sign-in via other providers, something else entirely—let us know. We listen.
For now, we're focused on the essentials: keeping things simple, keeping things secure, and getting out of your way so you can focus on what matters.
Your ideas.
