Why I Built Jottings: The Case for Microblogging

I miss the old internet.

Not the screeching modems or the "Under Construction" GIFs (okay, maybe I miss those a little), but I miss the feeling of ownership. I miss when we had our own little corners of the web that weren't rented from a giant corporation that could evict us—or worse, algorithmically bury us—at any moment.

That's why I built Jottings.

The Problem with "Content"

Somewhere along the way, our thoughts became "content." Our updates became "engagement bait." We stopped writing for ourselves and started writing for the feed.

Twitter (now X) is a town square where everyone is shouting. Threads is... well, it's there. But where is the place for you? Where is the place for your random thoughts, your quick links, your photos of your cat that don't need to be optimized for a 9:16 aspect ratio?

Enter the Jot

I call them "jots." They aren't tweets. They aren't full-blown blog posts that require a catchy headline and SEO keywords. They are just... jots.

  • A quick thought.
  • A link to something cool you found.
  • A photo of your morning coffee.
  • A quote that resonated with you.

Jottings is designed to be the home for these micro-moments. It's a microblogging platform that actually ships. It's built for people who want to own their words.

You Own It

When you create a site on Jottings, you get a real website. You can map your own custom domain to it. Your data isn't locked in a silo; it's yours.

We don't have an algorithm. We don't have ads. We don't sell your data. We just give you a simple, beautiful place to write.

Simplicity as a Feature

I built Jottings to be fast. The dashboard is clean. The editor gets out of your way. The sites are static HTML—blazing fast and impossible to hack.

It's not about chasing the latest features or AI gimmicks (though we use AI to help you with SEO and tags, because that's actually useful). It's about the writing.

Join Me

If you're tired of the noise. If you want a place that feels like yours. If you want to start writing again, just for the joy of it.

Give Jottings a try. It's free to start. And if you like it, you can upgrade to Pro to support independent software and get that sweet custom domain.

Let's bring back the personal web, one jot at a time.
