AI System Messages: Understanding Your AI Assistant

When you use Jottings AI features, you'll notice a small chat bubble that appears after each action. These are system messages—brief, conversational feedback from your AI assistant.

What Are System Messages?

System messages are short confirmations that tell you what the AI just did. They appear in a chat bubble next to a small Jottings AI icon, creating a natural conversational feel.

Examples:

  • "Made it shorter and punchier"
  • "Added a professional tone"
  • "Found 3 matching tags from your existing ones"
  • "Generated a fresh take on your idea"

These messages help you understand the AI's actions at a glance, without needing to compare before-and-after text.

Why They Matter

Instant Feedback

Instead of guessing what changed, you know immediately. This is especially helpful when:

  • You've made multiple edits in quick succession
  • The changes are subtle (like tone adjustments)
  • You're comparing different AI transformations

Transparency

The AI tells you what it did and why. This builds trust—you always know how your content was modified.

Better Collaboration

Think of it like working with a human editor who explains their changes. The AI isn't a black box; it's a collaborative partner.

Asking Questions

The AI understands more than just commands. You can ask questions:

  • "What is this?"
  • "Help"
  • "How do I use this?"

When you ask something like this, the AI responds in the system message without modifying your content. It recognizes the difference between a request for information and a request to transform text.

Where You'll See Them

System messages appear in two places:

AI Writing Assistant

After any action (generate, tone adjustment, transform), you'll see a message confirming what happened. Combined with undo/redo controls, this gives you complete confidence to experiment.

AI Tag Suggestions

After analyzing your content, the AI explains what it found—how many tags match your existing ones and how many are new suggestions.

Designed for Clarity

We kept system messages:

  • Short: Usually 5-10 words
  • Clear: Plain language, no jargon
  • Helpful: Actually useful information, not generic confirmations

The goal is to make AI feel less like a tool and more like a thoughtful assistant.

Part of the Jottings AI Experience

System messages are one part of how we're making AI writing tools feel natural and transparent. Combined with features like undo/redo history and context-aware suggestions, they create an AI experience that respects your intelligence and your content.
